Synopsis
This book follows the fortunes of Sebastian Gould, a young theological student, as he leaves rural Wales to attend Cuddesdon College, near Oxford. Sebastian is the orphaned son of a Welsh Rector and his life has been constrained by his father's religious beliefs. He is awkward and innocent and has been denied a normal education by his overprotective mother. The book charts Sebastian's growth into a mature and thoughtful man, as he learns to reconcile his faith with the realities and complexities of the world. Set against the background of the Victorian Church and 19th-century religious belief, it examines a variety of themes, including the conflict between duty and desire, the importance of forgiveness, and the power of emotional and spiritual redemption. Throughout, the author explores the role of the Church in society and what it means to truly serve one's community.
