A bout two years since, the author turned his attention to Agricultural Chemistry, with a view to prepare a text-book on scientific and practical A griculture. His particular object was, to furnish facilities for the introduction of A griculture, as a branch of study, into some of our academies and high schools. This design has been steadily pursued; although, at the time of commencing his investigations, the subject was involved in so much obscurity and uncertainty, that he often despaired of being able to prepare a book, which would be of any real service to those for whom it was intended. The late works of Liebig, Daubeny, Johnston and Dana, together with the Geological Reports, in most of the States, have thrown a flood of light over the whole subject; and although we cannot affirm that all is known which it is desirable to know, still, many fundamental principles are established ;and we have the materials for constructing the most important and useful science of modern times. The avidity with which the public mind have seized everything which promised to throw light on the art of husbandry, is an encouraging indication, that it begins to appreciate the vast importance of the subject.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a detailed compendium of the living principle, or, as it is often called, the âvital forceâ in plants. The text begins with extensive definitions and descriptions, then moves into a discussion of the forceâs character, composition, sources, and the assimilation of organic constituents. The author, himself a scholar, brings to his subject both historical and contemporary references, offering readers a detailed overview of what was then known as âAgricultural Chemistryâ. His examination of the properties and actions of what he terms âsimple substancesâ and âcompound bodiesâ is groundbreaking and offers not only extensive classification but draws relations between the two, denoting organic and inorganic constituents, as well as acids, alkalies, and salts. This book is a valuable resource for anyone with an interest in botany, agriculture, and the natural world.
