Preface reader will either be able to supply what is necessary for himself, or would not benefit even if a critical discussion were added, such questions are extremely difficult and have not always found a solution as yet. It is precisely one of the aims of this book to increase the number of those who can appreciate this side of the subject and will contribute to its elucidation. The reader who wishes to proceed further in any parts of the subject to which he is introduced in this book will soon find that the number of systematic treatises available in all languages is by no means large. He must turn at an early stage to the study of original memoirs. It is not difficult to find assistance in such sources as the articles in theE ncyklopadie derM athematischen Wissenschaften, which render it unnecessary to give a bibliography. The subject is one which has received the attention of the majority of the greatest mathematicians during the last two centuries and in which they have found a constant source of inspiration. Their works are generally accessible in a convenient collected form.
