As announced in prefaces of earlier editions, this little book lays no claim to be either a criticism or defence. It is simply an outline of Ruskin slife and teaching, intended for those who are purposing a careful and detailed study of his works. In the preparation of this new edition I have availed myself of advice tendered by those who criticised the book in its earlier and cruder forms. While the bulk of the book remains the same, the first chapter has been re-written, and enlarged with facts gathered from Praeterita. The rank which Ruskin as a teacher is likely to hold in coming years forms the subject of an additional chapter. J. M. M. RAWTEN STALL.
