It was first published in 1902, and has been reprinted so often that I have no excuse for any errors of fact which it may still contain. In the present edition I have altered a few passages in the text, and made considerable additions to the bibliography. I had hoped to add a chapter on Dialogue in Fiction, but the chapter is still unwritten. It happened that the author wrote fiction, after a fashion, before attempting to lecture upon it, and he is now conscious that the academic point of view has in turn been modified by the impressions gained during his editorship of The Atlantic Monthly.
