Volume have been at some disadvantage in that they were unable to meet in the course of its preparation, as they had intended to do, and have only been able to compare notes by letter. It is possible, therefore, that some repetitions may occur. Part I, which deals with the history of New Zealand up to the year 1870, was written by Mr. I rvine; and Part II, which deals with events and legislation subsequent to 1870, by Mr. A lpers. In the preparation of the work, information has been gathered from many sources, the most important of which are acknowledged in footnotes.
