His ambition having been to furnish both the student and the practitioner with a succinct account of the various medicines used in the treatment of disease, he has carefully avoided burthening its pages with theoretical or conjectural details of the mode in which remedies are supposed to produce their effects on the human body, or with any attempt at over-refinement in classification. The present state of medical science forbids perfection in any of its branches, and probably least of all in therapeutics, the author has therefore been more desirous that his book should be practically useful than theoretically scientific; and it is to his having kept this principle before him that he ascribes its success hitherto.
