Each of the eight volumes in the series contains articles andtables of data relevant to crystallographic research and toapplications of crystallographic methods in all sciences concernedwith the structure and properties of materials. Emphasis is givento symmetry, diffraction methods and techniques ofcrystal–structure determination, and the physical and chemicalproperties of crystals. The data are accompanied by discussions oftheory, practical explanations and examples, all of which areuseful for teaching.
Volume B provides the reader with competent and useful accountsof the numerous aspects of reciprocal space in crystallographicresearch. Following an introductory chapter, the volume is dividedinto five parts:
Part 1: Presents an account of structure factorformalisms, extensive treatment of the theory, algorithms andcrystallographic applications of Fourier methods, and fundamentalas well as advanced treatments of symmetry in reciprocal space.
Part 2: Discusses crystallographic statistics, the theoryof direct methods, Patterson techniques, isomorphous replacementand anomalous scattering, and treatments of the role of electronmicroscopy and diffraction in crystal– structure determination.
Part 3: Includes applications of reciprocal space tomolecular geometry and `best′–plane calculations, and contains atreatment of the principles of molecular graphics and modeling andtheir applications.
Part 4:Contains treatments of various diffuse–scatteringphenomena arising from crystal dynamics, disorder and lowdimensionality (liquid crystals), and an exposition of theunderlying theories and/or experimental evidence. Polymercrystallography and reciprocal–space images of aperiodic crystalsare also treated.
Part 5: Discusses introductory treatments of the theoryof the interaction of radiation with matter (dynamical theory) asapplied to X–ray, electron and neutron diffraction techniques.
Substantially revised and updated to take into account recentdevelopments, the third edition of volume B includes contributionsfrom seven new authors and a new chapter on extensions of the Ewaldmethod for Coulomb interactions in crystals. There are three newsections on electron diffraction and electron microscopy instructure determination.
Volume B is a vital addition to the library of scientistsengaged in crystal–structure determination, crystallographiccomputing, crystal physics and other fields of crystallographicresearch. Graduate students specializing in crystallography willfind much material suitable for self–study and a rich source ofreferences to the relevant literature.
