Major and classic record of American missionary readings and political consequences in late Ch'ing Dynasty China (1644 - 1915) in the late 1800s. Authored by the prolific, Connecticut-born evangelist, missionary Arthur Henderson Smith (1845 - 1932), Chinese name Ming Enpu, participant in the Civil War, of the Union Theological Seminary, who spent 54 years (beginning 1872) in China. Direct experience in the The Boxer Rebellion led to his excellent 1901 account in "China in Convolusion", and helped to persuade President Theodore Roosevelt to devote the Boxer indemnity payments China made into the Boxer Indemnity Scholarship Program and funds to establish Ts'ing-hua University. The aid also contributed to the term "Rice-bowl Christians" as the needy flocked to Christian welfare. 352 pgs, in 21 chapters; the last titled "What Can Christianity Do for China?".
