This volume contains a series of progressive lessons designed for students learning Assyrian cuneiform. This fascinating "mixed" method of writing continued through the end of the Babylonian and Assyrian empires. A thorough and accessible course, "Assyrian Primer" is highly recommended for students and collectors of antiquarian literature of this ilk. John Dyneley Prince (1868-1945) was an American linguist, politician, and diplomat. He was a professor at New York University and Columbia University, minister to Denmark and Yugoslavia, and leader of both houses of the New Jersey Legislature. Many antiquarian texts such as this are becoming increasingly rare and expensive, and it is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now, in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition. It comes complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.

Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.
The need of a series of progressive lessons for beginners in Cuneiform has long been felt in the Columbia University Semitic Department. The object of the present work is to lighten the labours of the English speaking Assyrian student, who has hitherto been compelled to learn, by sheer force of memory, the ninety-eight simple signs before he could proceed to read the most ordinary text. In the following lessons an attempt has been made to grade the acquisition of the signs and the learning of the main features of the grammar, so that the student may proceed, inductively and with comparative facility, to master simultaneously both the intricacies of the characters and the most salient facts of Assyrian grammatical structure. My especial thanks are due to my friend Dr. Robert J. Lau of Columbia University for the great care and skill with which he has autographed the sign-lists and exercises. J. Dyneley Prince. Columbia University, New York.
