Focusing on the types of research students will utilize in their careers, this introductory text makes continuous connections between research and its real world application. In an engaging and conversational style, Donald Treadwell introduces the conceptual foundations of communication research, provides practical guidance on the most commonly used methods, and concludes with a chapter on writing up and presenting.
Donald Treadwell earned his master’s degree in communication from Cornell University and his PhD in communication and rhetoric from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
He developed and taught communication research classes in classroom and online settings as well as teaching courses in organizational communication, public relations and public relations writing.
He has published and presented research on organizational image, consumer response to college names, health professionals’ images of AIDS, faculty perceptions of the communication discipline, and employers’ expectations of newly-hired communication graduates. His research appears in Communication Monographs, Journal of Technical Writing and Communication, Public Relations Review, Journal of Human Subjectivity, and Criminal Justice Ethics.
He is professor emeritus, Westfield State University, and has international consulting experience in agricultural extension and health communication.
“The examples are engaging. The writing is not intimidating. The student will find this introduction to the research process to be welcoming and interesting. The greatest strength of this text is its accessibility to the student new to research. Professor Treadwell makes communication research an interesting, non-threatening subject. This book offers enough information to get them started and makes the field interesting and, more importantly, an area that students could see themselves participating in as professionals, rather than just suffering through for a semester.”(Barbara S. Spies)
“I applaud the author’s goal of providing a research textbook in a 'friendly' length and size that links research methods to various communication professions... I believe it will make a valuable contribution that is needed by faculty at smaller schools who are preparing students to enter the job market rather than graduate school.”(J. Drew McGukin)
