As an author, my experience has been limited pretty much to newsletters for various clubs and organizations on an unpaid basis, but it did help me present my views on subjects ranging to the political, hints on being physically fit (this was after I suffered a SCD (Sudden Cardiac Death) on the Senior Softball Field #3 in Penn Valley, California. But let me get back to that because that event while serious, was only one of many instances that I came so close to passing the barrier that we all face from being alive, to passing on to whatever awaits us after our soul leaves wonderful mother earth as this planet is known by many million millions that have been lucky enough to have drawn a breath of air, or have enjoyed a taste of fresh or even dirty water. Our marvelous sun, that gigantic burning sphere about 93 million miles from our planet and is a burning mass about 330 times our little speck in the sky, which provides us with light and heat in our blanket atmosphere providing the means for all of our living occupants the ingredients to exist for years, with only a minor hiccup now and then to get our attention. Having reached the age of 80, my mind continually reflects back on the many instances that could have brought and end to my life. Some are the result of my own hasty and faulty judgment, others occurred because I happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The facts remain that for reasons I cannot comprehend, I survived and others were the victims of the well-known fickle happenstance of fate. Reports from survivors of near-fatal occurrences indicate they felt the presence of power or of a bright light. I have cannot recall anything even close to that. My feeling is that I was very lucky to survive, let it go, and get on with my life. So far that has been to my advantage and has left me with the strong motivation to relate to others because we are just: "One of Many!" Born May 26, 1925, Oakland, California of Danish Immigrants Niels and Anna Nielsen and who joined sisters Aida and Alice who played an important role in my development as a musician and athlete.Joined the U.S. Navy Feb 43. Attended Boot Camp and Radio School Idaho. Graduated RM3/c Jul 43. Ordered to amphibious and hand to hand combat training at Camp Pendleton, CA for my next 3 years of war at sea in the pacific. Advance to RM 1/C in 23 months and it was just in time for my emergency leave home to recuperate from the trauma incurred from the hit by a kamikaze on the USS Indianapolis (CA-35, the day before Easter and the invasion of Okinawa, Mar 31, 1945. More on that period detailed in the book.Discharged after the war, I enrolled in a Business College to take advantage of the GI Bill offered by Uncle Sam. Because I enjoyed my shipmates, and the Navy, I joined the Naval Air Reserve. As our squadrons grew, we moved to larger bases to accommodate every thing from trainers, fighters, and patrol planes.In 1952, I volunteered to go on active duty in place of a friend of mine who had 3 kids and had just bought a new house. Because he said he could not make it on his Petty Officer's Pay I decided to go in his place. The base yeoman arranged the transfer, but called me up and verified my college degree. She asked me why I didn't go to OCS? She told me that it was in Rhose Island. I agreed to apply, so she told me to pick up some papers and apply in San Francisco. I did, and 6 months later, I was sworn in as an Ensign in the Navy.My first assignment was to be a Communication Officer in Florida. Because I had been involved in naval communications for over 10 years, I was able to perform my tasks reasonably well. Plus, I met a beautiful girl Deana, fell in love, but she wouldn't marry me until she graduated from 3 year nursing school. Knowing this was the girl for me, I consented and we got married in 1957. We have produced a great daughter, Lori, and a fine son, Mark.Retiring
