Children are not enthusiastic in praise of grammar, most parents recall without pleasure their own trials with it, and many men of culture and of wisdom openly advise its banishment from the school-room, But two causes can be assigned for this wide-spread aversion to grammar. There must prevail a belief either that there is another and a better way to correct expression than that along which grammar conducts one, or that the difficulties in this, the only path to it, are so serious that few ever surmount them and reach the desired goal. There is, we believe, no other and better way to correct writing and speaking ;turning a child loose into the fields of literature will not, we are sure, put his feet upon such a road. De Quincey says that through a circuit of prodigious reading he has met with only two or three writers who did not sometimes violate the accidence or the syntax of English grammar, and any one knows that ordinary writers trip on almost every page.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book offers a unique and insightful approach to learning the English language, emphasizing the sentence as the fundamental unit of understanding. Rather than focusing on rote memorization of grammatical rules and isolated parts of speech, the author advocates for a more holistic and logical approach. By understanding the structure and function of sentences, students gain a deeper appreciation for the relationships between words and their roles in conveying meaning. This method stands in stark contrast to traditional grammar books that often overwhelm students with technical jargon and disconnected lessons. Instead, this book guides learners through a clear and progressive exploration of sentence development, starting from the simplest forms and gradually building towards more complex structures. Through this process, students not only master the parts of speech and their functions but also discover the underlying principles of effective communication. The author's emphasis on sentence analysis as a means of improving writing skills and facilitating translation highlights the practical applications of this approach. By understanding the logical structure of sentences, students can better appreciate the nuances of language and express themselves with greater clarity and precision. Ultimately, this book's insights into the power of sentence construction provide a valuable foundation for anyone seeking to enhance their command of the English language. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
