9781455580392: The Heroic Path: In Search of the Masculine Heart

What makes a man? How does one become a man? Today's man has no rites of passage. No initiation. No language for it. His only models are hyper-macho stereotypes and bravado men. He has rare few elders and may be fatherless. Even more, he faces a culture that is increasingly hostile to the idea of gender.

The Heroic Path is an experiential, rites of passage guide for men who are seeking the wild masculine, for women to help them understand men, and for moms who are raising boys.

Our quest for initiation is an ancient one, a mythical one. It is timeless and true in mythology, and the One True Myth. Our way to the wild masculine follows the windtrails of Jesus, as he moved from carpenter into Messiah, leaving the village, going under water, into wilderness and then back to the village to save it.

These eternal rhythms are our steps into manhood. It begins with severance - leaving the village, the vox populi, and mom. We head under water, and are identified with the Father and empowered by the Spirit. Then we are led by the Spirit into the desert to be confronted by Something Awful, where our identity is tested.  Then we, like Christ, return to the village and give our lives for it. These are our steps, this is our heroic path.

From the Author :

This book started as a journal entry the night my twin girls were born. I wrote down my hopes and fears about fatherhood. My fears of being a new dad also exposed my deeper questions about manhood. As I wrote, words kept coming, although I didn't know the destination. Weeks later, I had an imaginary conversation with J.R.R Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. They spoke of how myth can steer us in the right direction - "towards the true harbor." As I listened to them, I felt like I found a map for manhood. Tolkien called the Christ-story the True Myth, "where history and legend fused." These mythic steps of Christ from carpenter to Messiah - from village, under water, into wildness and back again - create our framework for masculine initiation.

Description du livre Little, Brown Company, United States, 2014. Hardback. État : New. Language: English . Brand New Book. God designed men to live with risk, adventure, and danger. But today s man has no rites of passage, no elders, no map to manhood. He may physically be an adult, but still wonders, Am I a man? When John Sowers twin daughters were born, he felt exposed, thinking manhood was out of reach. He needed direction. Following in the steps of ordinary men and the heroes of history, legend and myth, he uncovered a new and ancient road. Walk with John on his personal quest to discover the wild masculine and to become all that God intended men to be. From a thrilling brush with Kodiak bears in Alaska, to a war hero who rescued his comrades in the Valley of Death, from mythic heroes of Tolkien, to the footsteps of the One, True Myth - as Jesus walked from village into the wilderness, and back again. Stunningly written, this revolutionary book calls older men out of complacency and younger men out of confusion. It calls all men into the greater Story - into a life of sacrificial love, holy defiance, and clear purpose. N° de réf. du libraire ABZ9781455580392
