When 15 year old Valda Gimaldottir becomes a Valkyrie she thinks it is the answer to her prayers. Finally she can escape the stifling Dwarf society that won't let her have any fun. Except now all the other Valkyries resent her and make her life even more miserable. Plus, if she fails any of her appointed tasks, she and her family will be banished to the icy cold wastes of Niflheim.
Just when it seems she is finally getting ahead, Valda is caught up in one of Loki's twisted plans to rule the world. How can one Dwarf girl hope to stop the god of mischief?
The story takes you on a wild ride, galloping through the familiar people and places of Norse mythology, yet throwing in plenty of twists and turns that stay true to the spirit of the sagas. Valda & the Valkyries is suitable for readers of all ages who are looking for a light-hearted, adventure story.

Hi, I have loved books and reading for my entire life. I like books that are fun and adventurous and sweep you up into them and that is what I have tried my best to create with Valda & the Valkyries. The novel is based on Norse mythology and while it isn't a retelling of any of the established legends, I did my best to keep it true to the spirit of the original sagas. I tried to write something that you can believe happened in between some of the other events in those sagas.
The main theme running through the book is about being stuck between two worlds. Valda is a Dwarf who is turned into a Valkyrie. Loki is half god and half giant. I played with these feelings people get of not fitting in. I happened to lose my hearing as an adult. While I have a cochlear implant now, I still only understand about 10-20 percent of what is said to me. I'm at this weird point, balanced between the hearing and deaf worlds. It is a a very strange place to be and I channeled that feeling into a lot of Valda's emotional responses.
I hope you enjoy reading the book as much as I enjoyed writing it.
Mark Neumayer has been soaking up books on mythology almost as long as he has been reading. And that's despite the best efforts of the elementary school librarian to get him to read Dr. Seuss "with the other kids."
Mark has lived in New York, Florida, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Ohio. He currently lives with his wife Theresa and his son Taliesin in North Carolina, where he is working on the next book in the Valda series.
