After appropriating and re-mixing texts with the infamous Markov Text Generator, Van Buskirk is now exploring a “neo-classical” direction in appropriation (in contrast to the “Sturm und Drang” approach of remixing) by copying from an original text, as pure as it exists, and pasting word for word directly into a word document for means of creating a novel. It is Van Buskirk’s attempt to be even more “uncreative” as Kenneth Goldsmith so succinctly puts it. Van Buskirk’s goal is to be utterly unoriginal, and this includes being an artist with no original ideas, even as a conceptual artist (where the idea is the key). The phenomenon of online forums is utterly fascinating to ponder, beautiful, and epic in scope. The words left behind are writ in Internet concrete, and seemingly eternal as earth itself.
