9781469960326: Vantastic France

Barry Taylor decides to buy a Farmhouse in France on Ebay without even seeing it, to escape from a boring life in the UK.

Cracks soon begin to appear not only with the house but also with other  ex-pats that resent 'White Van Man' turning up with his family in their little hamlet.

Clarissa, the snooty neighbour is a force to be reckoned with, but Barry is a good match for her as long as he keeps his temper in place.

Affairs, weddings, funerals and a birth are all parts of the plot to this light-hearted entertaining novel. Some would call it fiction, but many who have read it have recognised some very familiar traits in most of the characters.

Vantastic France is a down to earth look at simple rural life in France.

REVIEWS
'gossips, fist fights, drink drivers expats in France says it all,'

'I loved it. As an expat living in France it is so true to life here. A really enjoyable read'

'Entertaining French farce featuring a mostly-English cast.'

I bought this where it was listed as a travel title, but see the book description here and the introduction, which both state clearly this is a work of fiction. So, don't expect a tale of "here's what happened to me", but do expect a funny story with some outlandish characters, some of which MAY be based on real life. Or they may not be. Either way, a fun read.

I enjoyed reading this book. It seems to be typical of family life - not just in France - anywhere. As one other reviewer said it would make a wonderful TV series. Hope there will be a sequel.

From the Back Cover :

REVIEW  BY BRETON BOOKWORM

I live in France and expected a very light superficial read.  Well, I have to say I was in for a surprise. It wasn't long before I was so absorbed in Vantastic France.

There are a lot of light hearted fun moments in the book, but it is also a very honest and a real narrative about what living in France is really like for English ex pats (of which I am one, in Brittany, where the story is set) and for the Breton people who have to put up with us!

Vantastic France is however much more than the above. It is also a very moving story properly constructed, which deals with issues such as loyalty, snobbery, family secrets and difficulties in second-time-round relationships and step parenting.

This is not just a book for ex-pats living in France, it is a heart-warming story about real people that leaves the reader wanting more.

About the Author :

Steve Bichard was born in Guernsey on the Channel Islands. He has travelled widely, but now spends a great deal of time in France where the novel is based.

Description du livre Createspace, United States, 2012. Paperback. État : New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. What really happens in the heart of Brittany to everyday ex-pats? We have all read the ?air brushed? versions of the idyllic lifestyle down in southern France and the ramblings of some authors with their cosy life in their rural retreats, and the plethora of escapism TV programs cleverly edited to make more exciting viewing! But let us scratch beneath the surface as we follow the Taylor s from their mundane lifestyle in the UK to France. What will be the fallout when ?white van man? and his family arrive in a tiny hamlet in a small Brittany village? Will they upset the French locals or will there be more sparks flying from other ex-pats! How much strain will it put on their relationship, will they cope in a foreign country with so many different laws and idiosyncrasies?
