Thirty eight year old Jade Danner loves her job appraising all manner of unusual antiques for the small coastal New England firm of Remerick and Company. That is, until the day she is asked to appraise a strangely unsettling jewelry case for the Lawrences, a prominent New England family. On the underside of the case, Jade discovers a hidden compartment, which contains a partially legible note written more than 100 years ago. The note leads Jade to the body of Erin, a slain family servant, entombed for decades behind a library wall in the Lawrence family home. After finding and reading Erin's diary, Jade realizes that Erin had unwittingly uncovered a serial killer, at work in 1870's Portland Maine. And this information had cost Erin her life. Jade resolves to continue Erin's quest, even after it becomes clear that someone is willing to kill to keep the past buried. Jade learns of an intriguing connection between the killer?s victims; they were found with a Mobius symbol on or near them. Jade then discovers that this symbol has been linked with deaths spanning a seemingly impossible 150 years. In the course of her quest, the line between hunter and hunted blurs, and Jade discovers the horrific secret which the Lawrence family has repeatedly killed to keep. A modern-day serial killer tries desperately to keep Jade from unearthing the past, then works with cunning determination to keep her from living long enough to reveal what she has discovered. Before all was said and done, Jade?s journey to the truth would cost the lives of people close to her, and would force her to confront some very personal demons from her own past.
Elizabeth Erickson is a Maine resident, a USM graduate, proud mother of a 21 year old son and avid mystery and suspense reader.
