9781479194674: The Brownstone

Midway through the brisk fall of 1941, Morris and Sadie Goldstein begin to cultivate a small community of tenants in their six-flat brownstone. As World War II descends, this group has no options but to cling to one another. The fate of each tenant depends on the relationships they develop as they grapple with the outcomes of war. The Brownstone is a story of compassion, grief, love, and understanding shared by this small, eclectic community.

From the Author :

World War II was an era when America grew up; when everyone pitched in; when reality set in that freedom was something earned - every day. "The Brownstone" takes the reader on a ride from Pearl Harbor through the evils of World War II and the new beginnings of an adult country. There is romance, murder, espionage, and hope. The setting of a brownstone apartment building in New York captures the essence of the people - strangers - who must learn to cling to one another, without knowing what that meant, or what that held for the future. Morrie and Sadie Goldstein, a middle aged Jewish Couple are the foundation upon which the other tenants build their hopes for a safe future.  Morris's desire to bring his brother, Sol, and Sol's family from the horror of Nazi Czechoslovakia to the safety of America is the basis of the story. The characters in each apartment: Doris, Kitty, Elizabeth; Ruthie and Ralph Schmidt; Marcel and Vivienne Lemereaux; Terry Blane; wrestle with their own devils as the war grinds to its inevitable end.I grew up after World War II and cut my teeth on movies where John Wayne, Van Johnson, Errol Flynn, and countless other movie stars depicted characters who single handedly won the war. And yet the reality of what this war meant to Americans went far beyond the fiction of these stories. The characters in The Brownstone became very alive to me. I shared their personal stories with them - long into the dark nights. They sat on my shoulders and whispered in my ears. This is their story - I am just the transcriber.
