9781483918679: Murder in Prague: Inspector Mazal Mystery

The body of the owner of the largest antique book store in Prague is found next to the Old-New Synagogue. Former dissident and current police officer, Inspector Jan Mazal is on the case. The investigation unfolds against the backdrop of the discovery or forgery of a fourth novel by Kafka and the Prague literary world. Mazal meets the Rabbi of Prague, members of a mysterious Hasidic sect, Czech diplomats and eccentric scholars. He has to deal with a former Communist boss and a suicidal father who survived the Holocaust and the Stalinist show trials. The resolution of the mystery is truly Kafkaesque.

About the Author :

Aviezer Tucker has lived in Prague since 1992. He wrote for the Prague Post and the daily Lidové noviny and has published books and articles about Czech politics, history, and philosophy.

Review :

"If we ever have a murder in Prague's Jewish Community, its plot should be as juicy, sophisticated and intellectually intriguing as the one in Murder in Prague. "- Alice Marxova, Editor, Roš Chodeš (The magazine of the Prague Jewish Community)

"As a Prague native, I appreciated the gennuine and lovable characters and setting, as well as the intricate story line. The neighborhoods of Prague are as much part of the story as the idiosyncratic protagonists. "- Veronika Tuckerova, Texas Chair of Czech Studies, University of Texas, Austin

"The book is a confident debut in fiction for an author previously associated with more-academic pursuits."
BENJAMIN CUNNINGHAM,  a Prague-based writer and journalist for The Economist, in BODY : Poetry Prose Word.

"Aviezer Tucker has invested a lot of intelligence and humor in this fictional tale.... Along the way, there is a lot of history (Holocaust and post-Communist), insight into Jewish life and sly reflections on contemporary Jewish and European conditions."
Zelda Shluker, Hadassah Magazine
