Linda Sue Grimes began studying and writing poetry in high school, encouraged by her creative writing teacher, the late poet/playwright, Malcolm M. Sedam and English teacher, Mrs. Edna Pickett. A native of central Indiana on the Indiana-Ohio border, she attended Abington Township Elementary School, Centerville Senior High School, Miami University, and Ball State University. Earning a Ph.D. in English in 1987, Grimes taught English composition for fifteen years at Ball State. Her poems have appeared in numerous literary magazines, and she has published four books, Jiggery-Jee’s Eden Valley Stories and Singing in the Silence, The Rustic Veggie-Table, and Command Performance: Singing for God and Guru. She maintains a literary presence on the Internet at Maya Shedd’s Temple: Literary Home of Linda Sue Grimes. Grimes resides in Tennessee with her husband, Ron.
William Butler Yeats averred, "Out of the quarrel with others we make rhetoric; out of the quarrel with ourselves we make poetry." The poems collected here under the banner of "Turtle Woman" express my own personal quarrel with myself over the past five decades. The language is sometimes salty, sometimes spirited, but always represents the inner turmoil involved in trying to follow Henry David Thoreau's reason for retiring to the woods: "to live deliberately."
