About the Author :

Harvey Kubernik is a writer and music historian, with over 44 years' experience as a pop culture journalist. He is the author of six books, including Turn Up the Radio! Rock, Pop, and Roll in Los Angeles 1956 - 1972 (2014), Canyon of Dreams: The Magic and Music of Laurel Canyon (2009), and Leonard Cohen: Everybody Knows (2014). He saw Buffalo Springfield perform live locally in 1966 and '67 and attended a rare Neil Young solo concert in Hollywood in 2014. He has interviewed many of the studio musicians, bandmates, record producers and engineers who have worked with Neil Young over the last half-century. He lives in America.

Review :

''[A] very well written and well designed book that also includes a very thorough discography cataloging everything from a 1963 single with the Squires to 2015's The Monsanto Years. There's also a couple of hundred photographs, some of which are previously unpublished and all carefully chosen and the book is interspersed with a year by year timeline that acts as a quick reference point for major events along the way. Neil Young fans are unlikely to be disappointed.'' --Louder Than War

Neil Young's career has traced an arc over five decades. The ups and downs of his career could fill a book, and luckily we have the supremely talented Harvey Kubernik to provide us with it. The author is a cultural historian with not only a tremendous gift as a writer but also the insight and understanding to unravel not only who an artist is but why...Once again, Kubernik has taken the reins of a wild horse and tamed him. He gives a face and focus to an artist nobody has really understood--until now. --Curled Up With a Good Book

Neil Young: Heart of Gold (Backbeat) by Harvey Kubernik. If you're a Neil Young fan, you'll have a field day with this one. Kubernik writes smartly on Young's studio and live albums and provides a complete discography of the artist's recorded works. Kubernik is an engaging music writer, and there are loads of color photos and images of Young memorabilia. --Marc Myers, JazzWax
