Richard C Hope after completing a twelve year commissioned engagement in the Royal Air Force, for which he was trained as a Navigator, resolved that when released he would buy a boat and sail around the world. Inspired initially by the book by a New Zealander who was released from Army service in England and sailed home single handed he found great encouragement from the account of a circumnavigation by a family, in a catamaran. With family enlargement before he could begin he chose to sell up everything in order to buy a new catamaran, to take his wife and three daughters on an adventure across the Oceans. Eventually, after a year in the West Indies they challenged the Pacific and finished the family voyage on arrival in New Zealand after three years living aboard Motley One. Soon though, unable to settle, determined to finish what he had set out to do, complete the plan, and to return to England to train for a new career, Richard set out alone, to sail non-stop, taking seven months, but arriving safely. His studies for his new career as a Chiropractor, and prompt immersion in his practice, gave no time for writing about his voyaging until, retired, with the advantages of computer technology and the advent of Self Publishing, he has been able to resurrect the logs and journals into a detailed account of the Voyages of Motley One. The first is an assembly of articles, the second tells of the early stages and the stay in Antigua, before the third relates their experiences on 'Motley One In the Pacific', to arrival in New Zealand. The last of course is the day by day journal of his solo 'Voyage Home'. Richard, having qualified to be a Chiropractor set up practice in Ryde, on the Isle of Wight and he still lives there with Sally. He can be contacted by email, rchope@btinternet.com
