This faith is, probably, the main-spring of their national great ness, and is quite above any aid from concealment, misrepresentation, mystification, or evasion. To show that no such arts have been used in compiling the A nglo-S axon Church, is the aim of the following pages. A vindication of the statements brought forward in that book is due to the public, which has received it with a degree of indulgence not often shown to similar works. A sufficient examination of his objections to it is also due to the talented and learned writer, who has found so many openings for impeaching its correctness.
