This 1856 biography was written just a few years after Millard Fillmore had served as the 13th president of the United States. From the preface: "IN presenting to the public the life of so distinguished a man as the subject of this memoir, the publishers deem it unnecessary to offer any apology for its appearance, either politically or generally, as it is not the object of this publication to inculcate the peculiar principles or views of any party. The subject matter has been carefully and thoroughly prepared by the author, after having had free access to every aid necessary to render the work authentic and reliable. American citizens have always evinced much interest in the history of those men whose public course has reflected credit on the times in which they have lived, and especially when such men have risen from the humble walks of life to the highest and most honorable position in the gift of an intelligent and enterprising people. The author knows full well how to present a truthful and interesting record of one, whose early life, untarnished character, and public career, have created a bright example for the encouragement of American youth. This work is designed especially for young men, and, with the hope that many may find in its pages an incentive to just ambition, we cheerfully submit it to the consideration of the reading public."
