9781500648411: MOTLEY ONE To ANTIGUA (Volume 2)

This book tells of the first part of the voyage the Hope family undertook aboard their sailing catamaran MOTLEY ONE. It covers their journey from England to Antigua. This is not simply the story of a voyage. It is about the way of life assumed by a family because of a desire to sail the oceans. They learnt from questions asked by people taken sailing while working in Antigua, how difficult it is for those who live all their lives ashore to imagine now family life must be,travelling around the world in a small boat. Technologies for Navigation, Communication and Weather Information have changed dramatically since the Motley One crew made their voyage but the stresses and needs of family life afloat have not. Much more will be told in the next book, recounting their experiences in the Caribbean and onward to Panama. The MOTLEY ONE story will inform, enthuse and encourage readers to make their own journeys across the Oceans, in their own sailing homes. and is surely a ' Must Read' for yachting families with an ambition to go Ocean Cruising After Panama came the Pacific voyage, to New Zealand, and then the author sailed home, single handed, non stop.

About the Author :

Richard C Hope after completing a twelve year commissioned engagement in the Royal Air Force, for which he was trained as a Navigator, resolved that when released he would buy a boat and sail around the world. Inspired initially by the book by a New Zealander who was released from Army service in England and sailed home single handed he found great encouragement from the account of a circumnavigation by a family, in a catamaran. With family enlargement before his could begin he chose to sell up everything in order to buy a new catamaran, to take his wife and three daughters on an adventure across the Oceans. The story of the first part of their voyage, which took them from England to Antigua in the West Indies is told in 'MOTLEY ONE to ANTIGUA' Eventually, after a year in the West Indies they challenged the Pacific and finished the family voyage on arrival in New Zealand after three years living aboard Motley One. Soon though, unable to settle, determined to finish what he had set out to do, complete the plan, and to return to England to train for a new career, Richard set out alone, to sail non-stop, taking seven months, but arriving safely. His studies for his new career as a Chiropractor, and prompt immersion in his practice, gave no time for writing about his voyaging until, retired, with the advantages of computer technology and the advent of Self Publishing, he has been able to resurrect the logs and journals into a detailed account of the Voyages of Motley One. The first is an assembly of articles, the second tells of the early stages, getting to Antigua, before the third relates their experiences on in the Caribbean , and 'Motley One in the Pacific' takes them through to arrival in New Zealand. The last of course is the day by day journal of his solo non stop return to England, 'The Voyage Home'. Richard, having qualified to be a Chiropractor set up practice in Ryde, on the Isle of Wight and he still lives there with Sally. He can be contacted by email, ropie@btinternet.com
