What is the insulting name for them?” “There...there is no such name.” “I see,” Pietra said, slowly. “So it is bad for a woman to do it, but acceptable for the man.” Feminist ideas were unusual in 1960s Sicily when a man could put his bride to death for discovering she was not a virgin. The unfortunate circumstances of Pietra's birth mean her mother is seen as a slut. Pietra is treated harshly not only by her mother but by most people in the village and she is kept in almost total ignorance, knowing nothing about sex. She doesn't understand sexual references or have any comprehension why her mother beat her for holding a boy's hand. Her life seems set in misery. And then she meets Don Roccapalumba...

I carry myself away when I write and I can carry you away into a world far removed from the everyday life you have now. It’s a thrilling ride. What do I write? I write about myself, my inner people who are the many aspects of me - and I also investigate the contrary ones who aren’t. I write about things that might be, that could be...if only. I explore the question what if? What do I want from favourite authors? I want something that will carry me away to another world – one that’s far removed from the mundane.
