Work and days is a didactic poem of some 800 verses written by the ancient Greek poet Hesiod around 700 BC. At its center, the Works and Days is a farmer's almanac in which Hesiod instructs his brother Perses in the agricultural arts. Scholars have seen this work against a background of agrarian crisis in mainland Greece, which inspired a wave of colonial expeditions in search of new land. In the poem Hesiod also offers his brother extensive moralizing advice on how he should live his life.

David Grene was an Irish-born classicist and scholar of ancient Greek literature. Educated at Trinity College Dublin, Grene later taught at the University of Chicago, where he became closely associated with the Committee on Social Thought. He is widely recognized for his translations of Greek drama and poetry, many of which were published in the influential University of Chicago Press series devoted to classical texts.Grene's translations are noted for their clarity, precision, and respect for the structural integrity of the original works. His approach sought to render Greek texts in accessible modern English while preserving their intellectual and poetic force. Through both his scholarship and translations, Grene contributed significantly to the twentieth-century study and teaching of classical literature.

Buch. Etat : Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - A foundational poem of early Greek literature offering moral instruction, agricultural guidance, and reflections on justice and human labor. In Work and Days, Hesiod addresses his brother Perses with counsel on honest labor, moderation, and the consequences of injustice. Blending myth, practical advice, and ethical instruction, the poem outlines a vision of ordered life grounded in diligence and reverence for divine law. Among its most enduring passages is the account of the successive Ages of Man-Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Iron-an influential myth that shaped later classical and literary traditions.Unlike the heroic epic tradition associated with Homer, Work and Days presents a more personal and didactic voice. It reflects the concerns of agrarian life in archaic Greece, offering insight into early Greek cosmology, social structure, and moral philosophy. Frequently studied in courses on classical literature and ancient history, the poem stands as one of the earliest surviving works of Western didactic poetry. N° de réf. du vendeur 9781515427551
