Biographie de l'auteur :
The author Lewis "Lew" Wallace was born on April 10, 1827 in Brookville, Indiana. He had a remarkable career as an attorney, then a Civil War General and then an attorney again and then governor of New Mexico and later as Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire. The most remarkable thing is most of us have never heard of General Lew Wallace outside of being the author of this book, whereas most other Civil War generals are well known. The reason is that after the Battle of Shiloh on fought April 6–7, 1862, in southwestern Tennessee, General Grant blamed his reverses on Major General Lew Wallace, as a result of which Wallace was relieved of command and sat out the rest of the war. There were actually two Union generals named Wallace. The other was Brigadier General W. H. L. Wallace who died of injuries sustained in the Battle of Shiloh. Lew Wallace As a result of having to sit out the remainder of the war, Major General Lew Wallace had time to write about it. It is believed that an incident in this book Ben-Hur is based on this. Ben Hur was leaning over the parapet looking at the new governor arriving below when a tile broke loose and fell injuring and almost killing the governor. Although this was an accident, Ben Hur was accused of trying to assassinate the Governor. He avoided the death sentence by being sentenced to life in the galleys instead. Is it believed that this sentence due to a mistaken belief is based on what happened to General Wallace during the Civil War. Lew Wallace wrote many other books and did not consider Ben Hur to be his best. He died on February 15, 1905 in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
