After the great success of her PBS series, Sister Wendy's Odyssey, here Sister Wendy takes a grand tour of 10 of Europe's great cities and capitals of art. Her passion for art has led her--with the readers of this book firmly in tow--to Goya and Velázquez in Madrid; Donatello and Botticelli in Florence; Caravaggio and Raphael in Rome; Van Gogh, Rembrandt, and Vermeer in Amsterdam; and Kandinsky and Rubens in St. Petersburg. She also makes pilgrimages to artworks in Vienna, Berlin, Paris, Venice, and Antwerp. Sister Wendy offers lucid, compassionate, and articulate commentaries about each of the cities and their great masterpieces--primarily paintings, although some sculptures are also examined. The tour concludes with a brief biographical section outlining the lives of each of the artists discussed. In the end, Sister Wendy doesn't set out to tell us which paintings are good and which are bad, she simply wants to share with us the art that she loves. This is art appreciation at its finest. From Booklist :
The popular nun and BBC art appreciator journeyed to Europe's most famous museums, and she describes here several paintings from each. To Sister Wendy, the Botticellis, Rubenses, and Vermeers are among the best ever created, but the way she explains their superlativeness is a refreshing trip back to what these paintings are about. Let the aesthetes, she implicitly seems to say, prattle on about color, technique, or social context; the general public just wants to know what the picture says, a yearning that Sister Wendy meets with compelling simplicity and modesty. She presents Birth of Venus and 60 other full-color paintings by accounting for the surrounding mythical figures (or actual people, as in Vel zquez's famous Maids of Honor) in their frozen moment and what point the artist is trying to make about life. Sure the good sister is subjective, but her honest wonderment is certain to affect all who read her book (and see the TV show) and perhaps improve their sensitivity to great art. (Booklist reviewed the Beckett and Patricia Wright title The Story of Painting , which, though different in form and language, is based on Beckett's television programs as well.) Gilbert Taylor
