Volume 2 of the epic business manga series Japan Inc. (Manga Nihon Keizai Nyumon) was published in 1987, at the height of the Japanese economic bubble of the eighties. The bubble had burst by 1991, but not before Japan and the United States had passed through an unprecedented decade of frenzied economic competition and grudging co-dependence. In the volume, writer Shotaro Ishinomori has cleverly woven together four of the more dramatic subplots in this relationship. Here we are treated to a Japanese insider's view of efforts by American banks to b break into Japan's financial market; the response of Japanese automakers to the anti-import backlash in the US., opening skirmishes in the war between America and Japanese computer makers; and the flirtation with unorthodox business cycle theories and strategies by investors on both sides of the Pacific.
Together these scenarios provide the reader with a fascinating cross-section of the frenetic decade that was the Roaring Eighties. Of course even in the wake of twin recessions in Japan and the US, these scenarios continue to unfold in unpredictable ways, as we'll see in Volumes 3 and 4 of Ishinomori's saga.About the Author :
