9781584302346: Beisbol: Latino Baseball Pioneers and Legends

Baseball, known as America's favorite pastime, is a favorite sport in Latin America as well. In this fascinating and colorfully written collection of profiles, author/illustrator Jonah Winter -- following the success of FAIR BALL!, his earlier book on the Negro Leagues -- gives us a guide to Latino heroes, including little known pioneers of the sport.

Readers learn stats and anecdotes about fourteen players including Dolf Luque, the Cuban pitcher who became the first Latin American star in the major leagues; Roberto Clemente, the legendary Puerto Rican outfielder of the 1950s and 1960s; and Felipe Alou, the first full-time Dominican star in the majors who later became the first Latin American Manager of the Year. Each profile is accompanied by a stunning portrait rendered to resemble traditional baseball cards. BEISBOL! Latino Baseball Pioneers and Legends recalls the drama of Latin American stars with all the color, grit, and style that should now be part of U.S. baseball history.

Bruce Markusen Rodriguez (introduction) has been associated with the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum since 1995, first as a senior researcher and now as Manager of Program Presentations. He is also the author of numerous articles and books about baseball, including ROBERTO CLEMENTE: THE GREAT ONE and THE ORLANDO CEPEDA STORY. He and his wife live in Cooperstown, New York.

From Booklist :

Gr. 3-8. In his turn at bat, Winter, an avid baseball fan and author/illustrator of Fair Ball! 14 Great Stars from Baseball's Negro Leagues (1999), commemorates 14 legendary Latino players (6 Cubans, 3 Dominicans, 3 Puerto Ricans, 1 Mexican and 1 Venezuelan). Using a baseball-card browser format and devoting a double spread to each player, Winter provides back-of-the-card basic facts and a career profile on the left-hand page opposite a baseball card-style acrylic portrait on the right. Resembling tinted photographs, the portraits of the earliest Latino players (like Cuban Martin Dihigo, said by some to be "the greatest baseball player of all time") are particularly poignant because most of these players, barred from playing in the major leagues by their dark skin, would never have been on baseball cards. Recommended for all collections because, as Bruce Markusen Rodriguez of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum declares in his introduction, these players "have helped make baseball . . . a better game." From School Library Journal :

Grade 3-6-Until recently, information about Latino baseball has been scant. Winter presents one-page biographical sketches of 14 players who played between 1900 and the 1960s, including Dolf Luque, Crist-bal Torriente, and Mart'n Dihigo. He includes a couple of fascinating facts after listing pertinent details such as years played, main teams, position, and similar stats found on the back of baseball cards. Each profile faces a colorful acrylic painting on a background that resembles an old card. While some pictures (Bobby Avila, Minnie Mi-oso) are not as clear as others, most enhance the text. Because few of these players are represented in other individual or collective biographies, this title will be a welcome addition to any baseball collection.
