Biographie de l'auteur :
Henry W. Gurley was born in the small community of Ace, Texas, to a farm family in 1936. Graduating in 1955 as valedictorian from high school in Huntsville, Texas, he attended then-named Sam Houston State Teachers College and did a tour in the United States Air Force before starting a career in auditing for a large insurance brokerage. The latter job allowed Gurley to travel extensively to almost every state over a period of thirty years. A massive heart attack in 1988 disabled him, and that is when he discovered the need to write. Since 1989 he has written four novels and six books of poetry. He lived for years in April Sound on Lake Conroe (Montgomery, Texas) before moving to Houston in April, 2013, where he now resides. On June 30, 2013, he became a member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Houston, where he has found many "fellow sinners" who "prop him up" obeying Christ's admonition by their actions. He is an accomplished duplicate bridge player, achieving the rank of Silver Life Master with the American Contract Bridge League. His favorite author is W. Somerset Maugham, and his favorite poet is Edna St. Vincent Millay. His close friends call him either "Warthog" or "Frosty" (email address name and poet-like nickname).
Présentation de l'éditeur :
When I wrote the poem, "Prop Me Up On The Leaning Side", I shared it with my cherished friends, Dean Lindsey, and his wife Carol. Dean, a wit extraordinaire, suggested a part of the poem's title should be the title of my next book since Dean and Carol are my unofficial caretakers. Thus, "Prop Me Up, Lord!" saw its first light. In my late 70s, handicapped, no longer driving and on a Quad-cane, I can sympathize with the leaning barn on the book's cover. Over the years I am sure it has been assailed with the slings and arrows of Mother Nature, as I have with the inevitable process of aging. My poems therefore are petitions, praise and thanksgiving to the Good Lord for being always at my side during my journey. And my journey has included my recent return to Christ. I have been blessed with a gift from God allowing me to pen these poems. My hope is that just one line of one poem may touch someone's heartstrings. If this happens, then I am rich beyond measure.
