A Spanish army of 40,000 invaded France from the Spanish Netherlands and stopped before Saint-Quentin, besieging it before advancing on Paris. The garrison of 2,500 men put up a brave and critical defense. The French relieving army was destroyed at the battle of Saint-Laurent. Saint-Quentin withstood the Spanish army long enough to wear out the Spanish treasury and army, while Henry II rebuilt a French army before it was captured and its defenders and citizens slaughtered.

THE 1557 WAR IN PICARDY AND THE BATTLE OF SAINT-LAURENT, 69 pages, (originally published 1896) The King of Spain invaded northern France from his provinces in the Lowlands. The continued existence of France was at stake as his massive army rolled up to St Quentin and launched a siege of the walled city. A French relief force fumbled the relief of the fortress and was slaughtered. The city, bereft of hope, held out as long as food and the walls permitted, but finally was taken by assault and its inhabitants raped and murdered. The sacrifice of the people of Saint-Quentin, however, permitted the King of France to build a new army and France was saved.
