9781591810827: Portraits of Pregnancy: The Birth of a Mother

This book gives pregnant women the information and affirmation they crave. The fine-art images offer a unique and personalized view into the diversity of the pregnant form. The stories of challenge and triumph cover a broad range of issues, such as infertility, the effect of pregnancy on relationships, and the loss of identity it can engender. These strong mothers will teach others how to connect with their inner strength, so they too can create the life they want.

From the Publisher :

This is the first book to combine captivating fine-art photographs of pregnant women with intimate stories of their transformative journey into motherhood.

The subjects of the stories for Portraits of Pregnancy: The Birth of a Mother come from the relationships Jennifer has built up during her 15 years of photographing pregnant women. Her archive contains more than 150,000 images of pregnant women and their families taken at various stages of pregnancy. While working with each client, Jennifer encourages the mother to embrace her changing body - to feel beautiful. Through the experience and her images, many women have said they see their own bodies and those of other pregnant women differently, as vessels of life, transformed and beautiful.

During the photo sessions, mothers-to-be tell Jennifer their personal stories - their hopes and fears for birth and their child, and their awe of, and sometimes aversion to, their changing bodies. They also chronicle their relationships, discuss infertility, families, and childhood. Many talk about their struggle to balance their careers with their new babies. Jennifer has carefully selected each mother's story, and has chosen Hugo to help her give form to these women's voices.

This book will empower a huge audience of pregnant women going through the major transition of becoming mothers. This beautiful format provides guidance as well as affirmation. Women can see how beautiful they are and read stories about women like them who have triumphed in the face of uncertainty as they move into the next phase of their life.

From the Author :

This book contains advice for new mothers, but not in a "Chicken Soup" kind of way - these lessons are woven into the story of my clients' own experiences with motherhood, and will, I hope, provide comfort and inspiration for other mothers undergoing this personal, emotional and physical transformation. The beautiful, fine-art images give women a unique and personalized view into the diversity of the pregnant form enabling them to more fully accept their own bodies. The stories were handpicked from my numerous clients, including several TV personalities, cover a broad range of issues, such as loss of identity, relationships, marriage, and infertility. The words of these strong mothers will teach other women how to connect with their divine feminine or their inner strength, so they too can create the life that they want to be living.
