The monk is a Gothic novel written by Matthew Gregory Lewis, first published in 1796. Lewis wrote it before his twenties and it took only ten weeks to write it. To the crowded church of the monastic order of the Capuchins, In Madrid, the old Leonila and her niece Antonia arrive, a young woman "who knows nothing of the world". Upon seeing the beauty of Antonia, two gentlemen give them their seats. One of them, Lorenzo de Medina, is offered to the young woman to serve her during her stay in the capital, where both women have just arrived to ask Raimundo, Count of Las Cisternas, heir to the recently deceased Marquis de Las Cisternas, grandfather of Antonia, to renew the pension that the deceased had assigned to his mother, the daughter of a shoemaker from Cordoba who had secretly married the son of the Marquis. When the son died, the Marquis assigned that pension to Antonia's mother, on the condition that he should not hear of them again. Lorenzo, who knows Raimundo, agrees to plead in his favor before him. Ambrosio, prior of the monastery, known as The Holy Man, and admired for his eloquence, is going to give a sermon, reason why the place is crowded. The prior, who as a child was abandoned at the door of the abbey, dedicated himself from youth to study and mortification of the flesh. Now, at age 30, he leaves his seclusion solely to give sermons in the church. Antonia is fascinated to see and hear him, not Leonila, who does not like her appearance of serenity. When both women leave, Lorenzo tells his friend, Don Cristobal, Count of Osorio, that someday he will marry Antonia.

In the audience one day is a young woman named Antonia, who comes to Madrid with her mother to seek the financial aid of their relative, the Marquis Raymond de las Cisternas. At the church, Antonia meets Lorenzo de Medina, a wealthy young nobleman who, charmed by her sweetness, promises to petition Raymond in her behalf. Before he leaves the church, Lorenzo sees Raymond and learns that he is the man who supposedly spurned Lorenzo’s sister Agnes and caused the heartbroken girl to enter the convent of St. Clare. Lorenzo challenges his former friend, but Raymond begs him to hear the story and then make his judgment.
