A Small Case of Murder is set in the quaint town of Chester, West Virginia, where everyone knows everyone, and there is never a secret that someone doesn t know. In such a small intimate village, how many disappearances can be left unquestioned? Following the death of his wife, Joshua Thornton moves into his ancestral home across country with his five children. While clearing out the attic, the children find a 34-year-old letter to their grandmother that implicates a local minister in an unreported murder. Today a double homicide has the whole town under a microscope. The state attorney general appoints Joshua special prosecutor to solve the crimes. In a place where gossip flies as swiftly as a spring breeze it is impossible to know who to trust. Asking simple questions about events long ago could prove to be deadly for Joshua and his family.

From the Publisher :
"Remember that dead body we found in the Bosley barn? How could you ever forget! His face is seared into my mind..."
From the Author :
Frequently, books are compared to children, with their authors being the parents.

This is a good comparison on many levels. There's the joy when the book idea is conceived. The anxiety when the author embarks on moving forward with composing it. The excitement and fear when it is released to the world. Then, there is the hard work that comes afterward, as the author introduces their baby to the outside world: readers.

Staying with this comparison, psychologists claim every child, even siblings, grow up in different households based on what is going on with their parents and family. The same holds true with books and their authors.

Every book is different--even books written by the same author.

This is my round-about way of explaining my first two books, the Joshua Thornton Mysteries, to readers.

A Small Case of Murder is my debut novel. I started writing it in 1998. It was originally released in 2004, and named finalist in the mystery category for the Independent Publishers Book Award. The second book in the series, A Reunion to Die For, followed in 2007.

Even though both A Small Case of Murder and A Reunion to Die For were critical successes, as I honed my writing skills, I came to realize they could be much better. Also, with the success of the Mac Faraday Mysteries, I feared that fans were perplexed by the different writing style and tone. So, I took both books out of print.

In 2011, by request from readers, I revisited A Small Case of Murder, re-edited, and re-released it. I also re-released A Reunion to Die For.
The Joshua Thornton Mysteries are not cozies. They are not as light as my mysteries set on Deep Creek Lake. In my debut novel, fans will meet Joshua Thornton shortly after the death of his wife. He is also the protagonist in A Reunion to Die For. In Shades of Murder (the third installment of the Mac Faraday Mysteries) Joshua meets Cameron Gates and they become the Lovers in Crime.

It is with pride, and fear, that I bring you A Small Case of Murder and A Reunion to Die For. As you sit back to read them, enjoy my first crack at writing mysteries.
