Présentation de l'éditeur :

Enjoy a front row seat to the momentous events of the last century.

In Travis Elborough's expertly curated collection of diaries, letters and journals, the great and the good rub shoulders with the obscure, the unsung and the everyday to bring us a unique top down and bottom up history of Britain during the twentieth century.

From the journals of Queen Victoria to the first instant web message from Ted Leonsis to his wife ('Don't be scared ... it is me. Love you and miss you.'), these varied and first-hand accounts offer a brilliantly candid and intimate insight into not only the epoch-making events of the century, but also the domestic and personal moments experienced by those who lived through it.

Biographie de l'auteur :
Travis Elborough has co-edited two anthologies of diaries, A London Year and A Traveller's Year. He is also the author of four acclaimed books: The Bus We Loved, a history of the Routemaster bus; The Long Player Goodbye, which lamented the passing of vinyl; Wish You Were Here, a history of the British beside the seaside; and London Bridge in America, which tells the transatlantic story of the sale of the world's largest antique. Travis regularly appears on Radio 4 and Five Live, and writes for the Guardian.

Description du livre Hardcover. Etat : New. From Queen Victoria's journal entry for 1 January 1900 ('full of anxiety & fear of what may be before us!'), to MP Oona King's lament at spending the end of the millennium in a queue, Elborough's compilation presents personal, contemporary and candid responses to world history as it happened. The book features over 100 diarists and provides one or more writers' reaction to every major event or trend, whether a world war, the 1975 Europe Referendum or the latest Star Wars movie.
