The Stage: While Brother Pacificus hides from his own past, the old world - monasteries, hospitals, guilds - is being squandered. Now he awakes to a new world order: the rise of the restless rich, the omnipotent state, the triumph of fact. The Players: They were nobodies; pawns, misfits, caught in the cogs of other men's schemes. A monk, a leper, a whore, an eel-catcher, three children with parents accused of heresy, washed up like flotsam in these Norfolk backwaters. The Inferno: Heresy, sedition, betrayal, murder; England's last Benedictine house boils over. Trust no one. Watch your back. Good advice, yet these unlikely heroes must now trade trust for survival. From the crypts of Saint Benet's Abbey, to the brutal streets of London and Antwerp, the companions must face their darkest fears to protect those they love. From the coarse woollens and shattered dreams of the marsh, to the silks and intrigues of the Tudor court, they must learn to hang together. Or, of a certainty, they will hang separately. A thriller, romance, and novel of ideas, The Heretic is based on historical events and real people.

Présentation de l'éditeur :
1536: a year when strange ideas intrude, strange lands are discovered, and the king's dissolution of the monasteries overturns the customs and authorities of centuries. In the new world order, spies abound and no one can be trusted. For Brother Pacificus of the Abbey of St Benet's in Norfolk, it seems as if his Abbey alone will be spared. But this last Benedictine house is mired in murder and intrigue. When Pacificus is implicated, more than his own dark past comes to light, while the body count keeps rising. Pacificus' fate becomes entwined with that of three local children after their parents are arrested for treason and heresy. Protected only by this errant monk, a mysterious leper and a Dutch eel-catcher, the children must quickly adjust; seeking their own identity, they soon find that neither parents nor protectors are quite what they seem.

Based on historical events, this post-medieval mystery is laced with romance, fuelled by greed and decorated with bouts of feasting, smuggling and jailbreak.

Revue de presse :
'Quite magnificent... moments of astonishing power... a work of importance... the capacity to become a cult book of its kind' --Penelope Wilcock
