William Fowler has worked in journalism and publishing since 1972, specializing in military history, current affairs and defence technology. He is the author of over 30 books covering military technology and conflicts from the 19th century to the Second Gulk War. Anthony North has worked for many years at the Victoria & Albert Museum, giving him a wide knowlege of public and private collections of firearms and has access to many historic and lavishly decorated weapons. Charles Stronge is an experienced editor and writer who has worked for several years in leading London publishers, primarily in the fields of politics, international affairs and military history.
Divided into two major parts, the book looks at early weapons, then brings readers up to date with modern-day arms that shaped the two World Wars and other conflicts of the last 150 years. Starting with the discovery of gunpowder, knwon as early as the 11th century in China and the 13th century in Europe, the ingenious inventions and theories that have led to the sophisticated automatic weapons of today are all discussed.
