Interview with Mike Tomlinson
‘Families make the best teams’ Candis Magazine, July issue
‘It was Jane’s selflessness above everything that stood out. When she was refused drugs that would help prolong her life by the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, a trust for which she’d raised over £300,000, she decided not to go public. Jane was almost dead before they gave her Lapatinib, and she had to travel to Nottingham to get it. She’d rather have died early than get special treatment, but she did give me instructions to keep fighting until the discriminatory nature of drug availability in the UK is reformed’

‘Jane was taken to the nation’s heart after her incredible battle against cancer. Despite being given six months to live in 2000, she spent the next seven years completing charity events and raising an amazing £1.85million. ‘We’d agreed Jane wasn’t going to leave letters or memory boxes for the family – we’d already made so many happy memories,’ says Mike, 47. ‘I wasn’t expecting a letter and it wasn’t the most obvious place to leave it. It was very hard to read.’

On 1 September 2006, Jane finished a nine-week, 3,700-mile cycle ride across America. It was hailed as one of the greatest endurance feats ever undertaken by a terminal cancer sufferer. Jane's husband, Mike, called it 'a celebration of the human spirit over the body's frailty'. HOW GOOD IS THAT? takes the reader behind the scenes of the ride and, as well, examines the shifting nature of the couple's perspectives as they faced up, with candour and honesty, to the greatest of challenges. The book, already substantially written by Jane for her part, will be completed by Mike to give the reader an incredible and moving insight into the achievements, emotional and physical, of a woman who inspired a nation.
