Synopsis

For years, Tom Cox might have seemed like a regular, hard-living sort of bloke --a lover of late nights, rock music and beer -- but he had a dark, furry secret. Tom was a cat lover. For a while, he kept his passion in check, but there was only so long he could postpone his true dream, especially after he met Dee, his moggy-loving soulmate. He let London and his job as a rock critic behind, and he and Dee, her cat Janet and three new kittens, moved to a remote part of Norfolk. They thought it would be easy. They thought their cat madness had reached its limit. They were wrong. In Under the Paw, Tom records the chaos of owning seven of the most charismatic, idiotic and duplicitous cats in the country. Suddenly on call around the clock for multiple sets of whiskers, Tom encounters death, depression, flying fur and the first human sentence spoken by a feline. Running through all the maelstrom is the heartbreaking story of his relationship with The Bear, his oldest cat: a 'painfully sensitive' survivor moggy who may or may not be an evil genius.

Revue de presse

'Book of the Month - [An] entertaining read’ Your Cat Magazine, July Issue
‘You probably don’t have to be a cat person to enjoy these confessions but it would certainly help, as this humorous book is full of incidents and situations that are entirely recognisable to anyone who has been touched by the paw...Despite some inevitable heartbreak, this engaging story provides a delightful catalogue of feline happenings at once joyous and touching’
Western Daily Press 20/7
'Men can be as cat crazy as women – you’ll see when you read this book. Tom Cox is a very funny cat addict. I particularly like his rules on how not to compare his cats with friends’ children. I laughed out loud at times.' Celia Haddon, former Telegraph pet columnist and author of many, many cat books
'Middle-aged spinsters move over; Tom Cox loves cats and he's not afraid to show it! I laughed a lot and cried a little when I read Under the Paw -- what a great testimony to the pleasures of sharing your life with cats' Vicky Halls, the UK's foremost cat behaviour expert, and author of the bestselling Cat Confidential
‘His descriptions of regurgitated mice, fur balls, ripped-to-shreds duvets, mistaking a frantic ‘miaow’ for the fire alarm and scattered litter trays are certain to have you in stitches’
Daily Mail 28/11
‘Tom’s story is the cat’s whiskers!’
Closer 21/3
‘We all know the stereotype of the Mad Cat Woman but is there a male equivalent? Tom Cox thinks there is – it’s him. He and his wife have six feline companions and if another six wandered in tomorrow I don’t think they’d be turned away. Cox insists that a house without a cat has no soul, though it may have other things going for it, including undamaged furniture and unstained carpets. Cat lovers will lap up this warm, funny book’
Mail on Sunday 7/6
