‘The book becomes an hour-by-hour and at times minute-by-minute account of the two weeks fighting in Garmsir alongside the Afghan government forces. It is not a book for the squeamish. On 11 September 2006, 40-year-old Captain Doug Beattie of the 1st Battalion Royal Irish Regiment was ordered to take the town of Garmsir, known as the Taliban gateway to Helmand Province. His commanders said it would take two days: in fact, it took two weeks of exhausting, bloody conflict. His wife thought he had taken a desk job - instead, he led from the front to seize an impossible victory, for which he was decorated with the Military Cross in December 2006.
