BEVERLEY NAIDOO was born in South Africa. She grew up under apartheid laws but as a student began to question racism and the idea that white people were superior. At 21 she was arrested for taking part in the resistance movement._In 1965 Beverley came to England. She married another South African exile. Apartheid laws forbade marriage between white and black people and barred them living together with their children in South Africa._ Her first book, Journey to Jo'burg, won The Other Award in Britain. It opened a window onto children's struggles under apartheid. In South Africa it was banned until 1991, the year after Nelson Mandela was released from jail. A few years later, when the parents of all South African children had the right to vote for the first time, Nelson Mandela was elected president. _For Chain of Fire she had to rely on reports and photos smuggled out of South Africa. But after 26 years she was at last able to return freely to research in the country. No Turning Back and Out of Bounds followed. In all her stories, young characters from different backgrounds face tense conflicts and choices. Beverley chose London as the setting for her first novel set outside South Africa but the issues are as dramatic - The Other Side of Truth won her the Carnegie Medal. PIET GROBLER grew up on a farm in Limpopo, South Africa. After working as a church minister, he made a career in illustration and now lectures at the University of Worcester. His awards include a Golden Apple at the Biennale for Illustration, Bratislava, the Octogone de Chêne, the Primo Alpi Apuane, the Noma Concours, the Alberto Burnichon Prize, the IBBY Honour List and severalSouth African awards. His Frances Lincoln books include Beverley Naidoo s The Great Tug of War and Katharine Quarmby s Fussy Freya. Piet lives in Great Malvern with his wife and daughter.
The Carnegie Award winning South African author Beverley Naidoo retells some 20 of Aesop's fables in a unique interpretation of these seminal tales. Aesop's name means a person of African origin and it is thought he was probably an Egyptian. He was certainly a slave who won his freedom through his wisdom, and these retellings reflect an African landscape. Despite their talking animals, Aesop's fables themselves contain a realism that is heard in a lot of traditional African stories. His animals match his human characters in their weaknesses and vanities. His morals have the ring of many an African proverb. The selection includes both better and lesser-known tales, chosen for their vitality and wit, to provide a range of morals and meanings, and for the opportunities they afford to reflect an African element in landscape and characters. For instance, although there are foxes in Egypt there are also jackals. Anubis, the original god of the dead for ancient Egyptians, is shown as a man with the head of a jackal. So the Jackal rather than the Fox is featured as a character. This unique story collection is vividly illustrated by Beverley Naidoo's fellow South African Piet Grobler, an internationally acclaimed illustrator. The two have previously collaborated on The Great Tug of War for Frances Lincoln
