His wild early driving style and a serious accident at Brooklands led to his licence being withdrawn from 1937 to 1939. Undaunted he bought up unwanted racing cars before the outbreak of World War II and, when peace returned, sold them to form the basis of British post-war racing revival. He built his own Challenger car, teamed up in Italy with Count Lurani to compete in Scuderia Ambrosiana and raced a factory Alfa Romeo 159, a BRM V16 and Aston Martins and later ran the Yeoman Credit team.
