Little Black Classics celebrate the huge range and diversity of Penguin Classics, with books from around the world and across many centuries. They take us from a balloon ride over Victorian London to a garden of blossom in Japan, from Tierra del Fuego to 16th century California and the Russian steppe. Here are stories lyrical and savage; poems epic and intimate; essays satirical and inspirational; and ideas that have shaped the lives of millions.Christina Rossetti (1830-1894). Rossetti's The Complete Poems is available in Penguin Classics.
Christina Georgina Rossetti was part of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, along with her brothers Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William M. Rossetti. She served as a model for them, but also shared in that artistic community, with written contributions to The Germ, a Pre-Raphaelite journal. This poem was published in 1862 and helped establish her reputation, mainly as a writer for children. She wrote poems and religious books. Illness restricted her activities, perhaps adding to the intensity of feeling in her works.
