Unsurprisingly, the mountainous landscape of the Lake District has some of the toughest mountain biking in the UK and, on major routes crossing the steep sided ridges between major valleys, long pushes or carries are inescapable - even for the fittest. This is only one aspect of the Lake District. As well as the mountains, you are never far from streams, lakes, ancient forests, rolling pastures and farm buildings. The variety of scenery and terrain is impressive and great for off-roading. There are plenty of challenging climbs and fast descents to get the adrenaline buzzing - though some are quite rough - and you will often feel remote and cut off from the world. The routes are graded: easy, moderate and more strenuous although none are what could be called hard core mountain bike routes. Approximate times and mileage are included. Al Churcher has over 36 years world-wide experience in a wide range of adventurous outdoor activities; from climbing, road cycling and mountain biking, hiking, fell running, downhill skiing and ski mountaineering. He is the author of Classic Climbs in the Dolomites (Cicerone Press 1987), Italian Rock - Selected Climbs in Northern Italy (Cicerone Press 1988), Great Routes in the Cotswolds - Mountain Bike Maps (Goldeneye 1998), Great Routes in the Peak District - Mountain Bike Maps (Goldeneye 1998), Dartmoor Mountain Bike Routes (Goldeneye 2005), and, Exmoor North Devon The Quantocks Mountain Bike Routes (Goldeneye 2004). Al has devised cycle routes for the Goldeneye range of Cycling Country Lanes maps to:- Dorset, Dartmoor & South Devon, Exmoor & North Devon, Lake District, North York Moors, Peak District, Pembrokeshire, Snowdonia, Suffolk and the Yorkshire Dales. He regularly contributes articles and photographs to a wide range of outdoor magazines.
