This history of modern Scotland considers all the major themes of the century—whether working-class militancy or the rise of Scottish nationalism, poverty or social reconstruction, the Scottish cultural renaissance or popular culture. Moreover, it shows how these themes were played out in individual communities and affected the lives of Scotland’s people. From the women who worked in munitions factories to the children in the school playgrounds, the cinema-goers of 1930s Aberdeen to the crofters of Knoydart who recently succeeded in buying their land, Richard Finlay offers a vivid picture of contemporary Scotland and the people who have shaped it.

Richard J. Finlay is Director of the Research Centre in Scottish History at the University of Strathclyde. His previous books include Scotland: The Struggle for a Nation (2000).Review :
Subtitled 'The History of a Society, 1914-2000', Finlay's book combines sociological detail and analysis with a narrative of Scottish development towards political independence. The detail is fascinating - covering everything from the health of the nation to Glaswegian gang culture and soccer sectarianism; from crofting and the fishing industry to indigenous attitudes towards corporal punishment, gender and education; and from working-class political militancy to gambling and the decline of Gaelic. A chapter provocatively entitled 'Our Selves Alone: Scotland and Thatcher' makes especially pungent sense of the movement towards devolution. A book which is sure to do well north of the border, but one which deserves a UK-wide readership too.
