Bill Smith was brought up in Hawick. He spent twelve years with The British Linen Bank in Scotland, before moving to London in 1965 to join Robert Fleming & Co., the merchant bankers. In 1992 he retired early as a director of the bank to concentrate on Flemings renowned collection of Scottish art, for which he was responsible for twelve years, finally retiring in 1997. His biography of the painter Sir D.Y.Cameron was published in 1992, followed by that of Glasgow Boy, E.A.Hornel in 1997(revised edition 2010). His life of the international financier, Robert Fleming, appeared in 2000.
