In 1983, Lon Nungesser was diagnosed with terminal cancer and given three months to live. In 1986, Nungesser published Epidemic of Courage: Facing AIDS in America. It was translated into German under the title, The Will to Live, the next year and has sold extensively throughout Europe. Nungesser designed his own medical treatment and his cancer went into remission in 1985. He began working on a psychosocial intervention for people with AIDS with the support of Dr. Philip Zimbardo at Stanford University. In 1988 Nungesser published Notes on Living Until We Say Goodbye: A Personal Guide, detailing his work on self-healing methods. Now in his seventh year since his "terminal diagnosis," Nungesser is in remarkable health. He is on the staff of the department of psychology at Stanford University and is writing his next book, Active Duty: Values, Consciousness and Social Activism. Lon Nungesser, Stanford University author and psychologist, has published three previous books.
